Our country India is a democratic country, ie a country where the government is elected by the people. Elections are held from time to time in our country to elect a government and it is the responsibility of the Election Commission to conduct elections.
The first election in India was held between October 25, 1951, i.e., that election process, which lasted nearly four months, brought India to a new place and placed itself in the line of the world's declared democratic countries.
From 1951 to 1998, only Ballot Box was used for elections in India. After 1998, the use of ballot box gradually decreased in elections because it used to take too much time to count votes, ballot papers used to cost a lot and fake voting was also done.
So keeping in mind all these things, the Election Commission of India introduced EVM which reduced corruption in elections, votes counting time, election expense very much but there was still a shortage in India's election process and That's NOTA.
Let us know what is NOTA, what is NOTA full form, what is NOTA history and what is NOTA use in Indian elections?
What is NOTA Full Form and what does NOTA mean?
What is NOTA and what is NOTA use in voting, you will know only by reading what is NOTA full form, then friends NOTA full form is "None of the Above" and the Hindi meaning of NOTA full form is " इनमें से कोई भी नहीं ".
A few years ago, if any of the candidates in the election did not feel worthy of any voter, then the voters did not go to vote and in such a situation they were deprived of using their vote.
Therefore, the Election Commission made such a system that a system should be developed in the voting system so that it can be recorded how many percent of the people have not considered it appropriate to vote for anyone. That is, there is a button of NOTA i.e. None of the Above in the EVM machine.
Now the 'NOTA' option is being given to the citizens of our country while voting and this option is also being used by many people during voting. By pressing the NOTA button, one can choose to cast his vote to any candidate. At the same time, the vote of that voter is counted in NOTA at the time of counting of votes.
History of NOTA in India - NOTA History
It is believed that the first use of 'NOTA' in the ballot was in 1976 in the election of Isla Vista Municipal Advisory Council in California, USA. After which other countries also slowly started giving this option to the voters of their country.
Currently, it is being used in countries like Colombia, Ukraine, Brazil, Bangladesh, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Chile, France, Belgium and Greece. Apart from this, there are many countries where it has also been stopped using NOTA. Let us now talk about when the use of NOTA started in India.
In the year 2009, Kolekar had submitted a petition in the Supreme Court by the Election Commission of India to include NOTA during voting and in this application, the Election Commission of India had asked to add the NOTA button to the EVM machine.
However, the Central Government at that time did not support the Election Commission in this decision and the Government did not want to add this option to the EVM machine. Later the civil rights organization People's Union for Civil Liberties also filed a PIL in support of NOTA.
On which, in 2013, the court decided to give the option of NOTA to the voters. After which this option was added to the EVM machine and people got the right to not give their votes to any candidate who did not qualify.
In 2013, NOTA was adopted for the first time in five state assembly elections. At that time, people were given this option for the first time in the assembly elections held in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.
One more thing, the Election Commission made it clear that NOTA prices will be counted but it will be kept in the category of canceled votes. It was clear in this way that it would not have any effect on the results of the election.
